Artichokes Are Thistles, Really!

weekly CSA produce share
Fennel does double duty: apparently it attracts beneficial bugs to the farm, plus, you can eat it!

Yes, artichokes are a type of thistle. We know, it doesn’t seem possible that something as tasty as artichokes are related to those prickly weeds, but they are. Then again, some of the other things we get in our share are related to so-called weeds, too. A case in point, dandelion greens, which we picked up today, but swapped, weed for weed, for more artichokes.

This weeks share had:

  • Artichokes (4)
  • Red La Soda potatoes (6)
  • Grapefruit (2)
  • Dandelion greens (1 bunch) — traded for more artichokes
  • Fennel (1 bunch)
  • Red Russian kale (1 bunch)
  • Lettuce (1 head)
  • French breakfast radishes (1 bunch)
