Is That a Mutant Butternut Squash?

weekly CSA produce share
Oh, my, that’s one huge squash! We got the first greens of the season, too.

No. Not a mutant, but a particular variety of butternut squash: Pennsylvania Dutch Crookneck Squash. That’s one of the great things about belonging to a CSA: you get vegetables that you rarely (or never) see in the stores. In this case, this particular variety of squash can be huge — up to 20 pounds — and we did happen to see one nearly that size during pick-up. It made our selection seem right puny.

This week’s share:

  • Pennsylvania Dutch crookneck squash (1)
  • Sweet potatoes (2)
  • Bell peppers (2)
  • Radishes (1 bunch)
  • Shishito peppers (1 basket)
  • Red Cimarron onions (3)
  • Roasted chilies (1 bag)
  • Braising mix (1 bag)
  • Habenero peppers (2-3 — a bonus item)

Plus, we picked up some okra from the surplus basket. Yum!
