No. Not a mutant, but a particular variety of butternut squash: Pennsylvania Dutch Crookneck Squash. That’s one of the great things about belonging to a CSA: you get vegetables that you rarely (or never) see in the stores. In this case, this particular variety of squash can be huge — up to 20 pounds — and we did happen to see one nearly that size during pick-up. It made our selection seem right puny.
This week’s share:
- Pennsylvania Dutch crookneck squash (1)
- Sweet potatoes (2)
- Bell peppers (2)
- Radishes (1 bunch)
- Shishito peppers (1 basket)
- Red Cimarron onions (3)
- Roasted chilies (1 bag)
- Braising mix (1 bag)
- Habenero peppers (2-3 — a bonus item)
Plus, we picked up some okra from the surplus basket. Yum!
