What Kind of Melon is That?

weekly CSA produce share
Look at the melon in the upper right. What the heck is it?

Yes, it’s a Casaba melon, and a large Casaba melon at that. Often we don’t know the exact type of produce we’re getting until we arrive at the CSA pickup. The CSA crew lists what will be available that week on the website, but, sometimes, as with this week, the Casaba melon was listed simply as “melon.” Sometimes the list will include, simply “Farmer’s choice,” meaning that, when the list was made up, at least one of the produce items was still unknown.

You might think that’s a bother, not knowing what you’re getting in advance, but we think of it more as an adventure. It’s kind of fun to head down to pick up our produce and see what we’re getting.

So, this week we picked up:

  • Casaba melon (1)
  • Red okra (1 basket)
  • Hungarian wax peppers (1 bag) traded for more okra
  • Lemon cucumbers (3)
  • Bell peppers (4)
  • Yellow beans (1 bag)
  • Corn (4 ears)
  • Roma tomatoes (1 basket)

Plus, we picked up 3 eggplant from the surplus basket.
