Purple is the Color of the Week!

weekly CSA share
Purple potatoes, purple peppers, and purple pods!

Well, the purple okra pods are really more of a red, but we like the alliteration so much, we’ll stick with “purple pods” in our photo caption. If you look back at posts about the produce we were picking up in January, you get some idea how our food changes with the seasons. Winter is full of greens, almost to the point where we can’t eat them fast enough, while summer is more “fruit-like”, with peppers, melons, okra, and tomatoes. Often these changes, and what’s in season, are lost on most consumers. They buy produce to match a recipe, and then, because it’s out of season, are disappointed in the flavor, instead of buying what’s fresh and full of flavor, then finding a recipe that will highlight it. Sure, it’s more difficult, but good food is worth it.

So, this week our share consisted of:

  • Watermelon (1)
  • Glendale Gold Little Sweetie onions (1 basket)
  • Purple Majesty potatoes (6)
  • Bell peppers (5)
  • Armenian cucumber (1)
  • Okra (1 basket)
  • Shishito peppers (1 basket) traded for more okra
  • Sweet corn (4 ears)
