A Rainbow of Chard

weekly CSA produce
Look at those colorful stems on the rainbow Swiss chard. Beautiful!

This week, all the CSA share items really appealed to us, and we were excited to be taking everything home. Not only did our produce look great, but we got lucky and found an extra bunch of Swiss chard in the surplus basket. Since we both love chard, we snagged it. (We’ll admit that we didn’t even think of picking up a bunch of dandelion greens, also surplus).

Our share this week includes:

  • Valencia oranges (5)
  • Red LaSoda potatoes (5)
  • Carrots (1 bunch)
  • Swiss chard (1 bunch)
  • I’itoi onions (1 bunch)
  • Curly kale (1 bunch)
  • Fennel (1 bunch)
  • Frisée lettuce (1 bag)

We’re already thinking of Fennel Gratin for the fennel, but that might change, so let’s just see how everything goes down this week.

Let’s see. We had some potatoes done up in the microwave — Red LaSoda potatoes have a super creamy texture when microwaved. The lettuce made several days of salads, one with a peach vinaigrette (made with our own peach jam). The Curley Kale is perfect for making Kale Chips. Have you not had Kale Chips? Try them; that’s the best way to eat kale. We experimented with making blackened fennel and carrots as a side. It turned out just okay, so we’re still tweaking the recipe. Finally, we made up a new recipe for chard that we’ll be posting on the 9th.
