Before we headed down to pick up our shares, we checked the harvest list. Seeing that okra was available, we waited until a bit later than usual to leave. We thought that the trading baskets might be full of okra, and we’d be able to trade off some items that we either have a lot of (onions), or that we don’t care for as much (roasted green chili peppers). It’s not that we wouldn’t take them and use them, but, if we can get something we like a lot better, why not trade?
Then, as we were waiting to buy our eggs, someone came in and placed her okra in the surplus basket, which is the free-for-all zone. We snagged it, ending up with that Wall of Great Okra you see above. All together, we received:
- Red potatoes (3)
- Beauregard sweet potatoes (3)
- Okra (1 basket)
- Roasted Green Chilies (1 bag) traded for okra
- White onions (3) traded for okra
- Summer squash (2)
- Cucumbers (3)
- Sweet corn (3)
Not too bad of a haul, and, for several items, we were able to choose the variety. For example, for the cucumbers, we chose three small lemon cucumbers and bypassed the large standard green cukes. With the summer squash, we could have picked out some zucchini-like squash, but we went with patty-pans for a difference. We’ll update next week as to how all this food ended up in our gullets.
September 11 update. If you bet that we wouldn’t be able to eat all that okra, you lost. The last of the okra went into a batch of Gumbo, along with one of the summer squash. Two ears of corn made a nice side as corn on the cob — we just did them up in the microwave, and a couple of those little lemon cucumbers we used for sandwich toppings along with some shaved carrot. The sweet potatoes went into a batch of Oven Fries, for which we changed the spice combination to smoked paprika and chili powder. So, what happened to the rest of the okra? Well, besides the Gumbo, we had a batch of Spiced and Roasted Okra, a batch of Mushroom and Okra Purloo (watch for that recipe soon), and a batch of Sweet Potato and Okra Fritters. Each was a great way to eat okra.
