Once again, last week we were away on vacation, so you didn’t get to see what we got in our CSA share that week. But, this week we’re back, and we received:
- Tomatoes (2 shares/baskets)
- Tomatillos (1 basket)
- Quelites (which we traded for five more Red La Soda potatoes)
- Red La Soda Potatoes (5)
- Fresh Basil (1 bag)
- Cantaloupe (1) — some people call these Muskmelon
- Purple onions (5 small)
We also picked up a few extra tomatoes from the surplus basket. Who would ever pass by fresh, truly vine-ripened tomatoes? Not us.
Some of the basil already went into a batch of tomato sauce (made from the tomatoes we froze the other week). The cantaloupe is just going to be eaten as a fruit sides. There isn’t much one can do to make fresh melons taste better; they are perfect as they are. We’ll use most of the tomatoes and remaining basil as simple tomato salads (tomato, fresh basil, salt, pepper, and olive oil), but one or two are destined for a fresh tomato pizza. Yum. The tomatillos are a challenge for us to use, so we’ll have to see what happens to them. We’ll update next week.
July 17 update: The basil went into salads and on pizza. The tomatoes were delicious just as salads, and the tomatillos became a Roasted Tomatillo Salsa. We still don’t think of tomatillos as a favorite — we’ll trade them when possible — but this was an acceptable way of using them. And a few potatoes went into a batch of mushroom and potato curry (basically Khumbi Mattar with potatoes standing in for peas) with a side of Chapatis.
